Frank Jacobs
Frank Jacobs built his career as an American humor writer closely associated with Mad magazine, where his specialty included song parodies and sharply observed comic verse. The Mad World of William M. Gaines grew from that workplace knowledge into a humorous biography of the publisher who shaped Mad and earlier led EC Comics. First issued by Lyle Stuart in 1972, the book presents Gaines through the perspective of a staff writer familiar with the magazine's routines, personalities, and irreverent house style. Library records classify the subject as biography while contemporary comics reference sources emphasize Jacobs's own role as a major Mad contributor. That dual position, colleague and comic chronicler, distinguishes the book from a conventional corporate history. Jacobs also produced numerous Mad-related collections over a career spanning decades. The Mad World of William M. Gaines remains a useful link between his parody writing and his firsthand account of the editor-publisher behind one of American satire's most recognizable institutions.
