George Sidney Paternoster (1866-1925) was born in Cirencester, Gloucestershire, and earned his living writing for newspapers and popular magazines, among them Truth, The Grand Magazine and The Red Magazine. He had a run of success with fiction built around new machines and criminal ingenuity: The Motor Pirate in 1903, a sequel that put the same character afloat as The Cruise of the Conqueror, and The Lady of the Blue Motor in 1907. He also worked as a journalist on The Times, and in 1913 he published The Lords of the Devil's Paradise, an account of the Putumayo rubber atrocities in South America.
