George Borrow was an English writer, translator, linguist, and traveler whose books draw on encounters across Britain and continental Europe. John Murray issued Lavengro in 1851; it blends autobiography and fiction as its wandering narrator moves through barrack towns, London literary work, and meetings with Romani communities. Its title is explained as meaning “word-master,” and The Romany Rye continues the narrative. The Turkish Jester appeared posthumously in 1884 as Borrow’s translation of comic tales about Cogia Nasr Eddin Effendi, reflecting his sustained interest in languages and popular storytelling. Borrow’s best-known travel account, The Bible in Spain, grew from his work distributing scriptures on the Iberian Peninsula. The George Borrow Trust also identifies The Zincali among his important studies of Spanish Romani life. Together, Lavengro and The Turkish Jester show two connected sides of his career: the self-dramatizing traveler and the translator who brought vernacular tales into English.
