George Koskimaki
George Koskimaki documented the 101st Airborne Division as a paratrooper, military historian, and meticulous collector of firsthand testimony. In World War II he was radio operator to division commander Maxwell Taylor, giving him direct experience of the airborne campaigns he later documented. Hell’s Highway reconstructs the division's part in Operation Market Garden and the Holland campaign from September through November 1944. Koskimaki combines his own memory with accounts gathered from hundreds of veterans, following landings, contested roads, separated units, and the difficult effort to hold a narrow Allied corridor. The expanded title is Hell's Highway: Chronicle of the 101st Airborne Division in the Holland Campaign, September-November 1944. G. and E. Koskimaki privately produced the 1989 original; Casemate reissued it in 2011. Koskimaki's method gives space to enlisted participants alongside commanders, preserving how the operation looked from scattered positions rather than only from headquarters. Hell’s Highway stands within his broader chronicle of the Screaming Eagles and turns collective recollection into a detailed operational narrative.
