George Macilwain was a nineteenth-century British surgeon and medical writer whose publications joined clinical reporting to proposals for improving surgical practice. Born in 1797 to an Irish country surgeon, he studied under John Abernethy, qualified through the Royal College of Surgeons in 1818, and served at the Finsbury Dispensary. A Treatise on Stricture of the Urethra appeared in London in 1824 as a practical manual directed chiefly to students and junior practitioners. Macilwain expanded and retitled the work in 1830 as Surgical Observations On the More Important Diseases of the Mucous Canals of the Body, adding discussion of the oesophagus, rectum, groin swellings, and tracheotomy. He later published on skin disease, inflammation, tumours, hernia, and opposition to experiments on living animals. Macilwain also produced a widely read memoir of Abernethy with help from the surgeon’s family. Membership in the Royal Institution and the Royal Medico-Chirurgical Society connected his writing to the professional medical networks of Victorian London.
