George Thomas Stevens (1832–1921) was born at Upper Jay in the Adirondacks, took his medical degree at Castleton Medical College in Vermont in 1857, and was practicing at Westport and Keeseville when the war began. He joined the 77th New York as assistant surgeon in November 1861, was commissioned surgeon in February 1863, and mustered out with the regiment in December 1864. Most of the scenes engraved for his book came from sketches he made on the ground. He later practiced in Albany and then New York City as an ophthalmologist, published on the muscles of the eye, and introduced the term heterophoria in 1886.
