George William Russell was an Irish poet, essayist, painter, editor, and advocate of agricultural cooperation who usually published under the name A.E. His writing moved freely between mystical reflection and practical arguments about Irish public life. THE DIVINE VISION AND OTHER POEMS brings Celtic imagery, nature, love, and spiritual longing into a single poetry collection, while The hero in man considers the nobility and inward potential Russell believed could persist beneath outward failure. His economic and political work grew from direct engagement with Ireland’s cooperative movement. The Economics of Ireland and the Policy of the British Government appeared with an introduction by Francis Hackett and addressed Irish economic conditions under British rule. The National Being develops Russell’s vision of an Irish polity shaped by cooperation, civic purpose, and a shared national ideal. He also edited the Irish Homestead and later the Irish Statesman, roles that joined his literary work to debates about farming, labor, and national development.
