Gilbert Murray was a classical scholar, translator, and internationalist who served as Regius Professor of Greek at Oxford. Hamlet and Orestes; a Study in Traditional Types was his 1914 Annual Shakespeare Lecture for the British Academy, comparing Shakespeare's prince with patterns found in Greek tragedy and heroic legend. The League and its guarantees reflects Murray's later work for the League of Nations Union and his belief that international institutions could make peace more secure. A Comparison of the Aims of the Anti-Slavery Society belongs to his continuing public engagement with humanitarian causes. Murray made Greek drama accessible to broad English-speaking audiences through translations of Euripides, but scholarship was only one part of his public life. He promoted the League of Nations after the First World War and later helped establish the Oxford Committee for Famine Relief, which became Oxfam. His writing therefore connects classical interpretation with debates about law, cooperation, and civic responsibility.
