Guru Amardas was the third Sikh Guru and the composer of Anand Sahib, a foundational hymn centered on spiritual bliss, devotion, and transformation through the Guru’s word. The composition appears in the Guru Granth Sahib in Raag Ramkali, on Angs 917 through 922, and its complete form contains forty pauris. Sikh communities also use a shorter liturgical form made from the opening five pauris and the concluding one. The work remains part of worship and is heard at ceremonies marking both joyful and solemn passages of life. Guru Amardas strengthened the institutions of langar and congregational organization, linking spiritual teaching with equality and service. Anand Sahib therefore belongs not only to Sikh literary history but to a continuing devotional practice in which recitation, music, and communal gathering meet. Readers approaching the hymn in translation should recognize that its recurring language of anand means a state of complete bliss grounded in remembrance of the divine, rather than ordinary passing happiness.
