H. A. Appleton
H. A. Appleton was a technical writer and co-author, with W. H. Simmons, of The Handbook Of Soap Manufacture. Published in London by Scott, Greenwood & Son in 1908, the book was designed for soap makers, works chemists, analysts, and readers seeking a practical account of the industry. Its chapters cover raw materials, manufacturing processes, treatment of fats and oils, household and toilet soaps, glycerine recovery, analysis, and factory equipment. The authors state that elementary chemistry is assumed in the more scientific sections, while much of the volume remains accessible to readers outside direct manufacturing work. Twenty-seven illustrations support its descriptions of machinery and production. The Handbook Of Soap Manufacture belongs to a period when industrial knowledge was increasingly organized into specialist manuals that connected chemical principles with factory practice. Appleton’s contribution is preserved chiefly through this collaborative work rather than a broad personal bibliography. The book remains a detailed historical source on early twentieth-century soap production, terminology, quality control, and the professional expectations placed on industrial chemists.
