H. Darwin McIlrath travelled as an American cyclist and newspaper correspondent whose extended journey with his wife, Hattie, became Around the World on Wheels for the Inter Ocean. Sponsored by the Chicago newspaper Inter Ocean, the couple left the city in April 1895 and travelled for more than three years through North America, Asia, the Middle East, and Europe. McIlrath sent reports home during the trip, and the resulting book combines route narrative, encounters, practical cycling difficulties, and observations about unfamiliar places. The volume also gives Hattie McIlrath an important presence as a fellow traveller rather than a silent companion. Their expedition covered roughly thirty thousand miles at a time when long-distance bicycle travel demanded repeated changes of transport, equipment, and planning. Around the World on Wheels for the Inter Ocean preserves both the promotional ambitions of newspaper-sponsored travel and the couple's experience of making a global itinerary with late nineteenth-century roads, ships, railways, and bicycles.
