Yanagihara edits T, the New York Times style magazine, and wrote A Little Life across eighteen months while working full time. The novel follows four men from university into middle age and puts one of them through sustained abuse and its aftermath over seven hundred pages, and the critical split it produced has never really closed: some readers call it the most honest book about trauma they have read, others an endurance test that withholds any reason for the suffering. To Paradise is three linked novels across three centuries. She grew up in Hawaii and Texas.
