Harold Keith was an Oklahoma writer, historian, and pioneering sports publicist whose knowledge of regional history shaped his fiction for young readers. He earned journalism degrees from the University of Oklahoma and held its sports publicity directorship for thirty-nine years. Research for his master’s thesis led him to interview twenty-two Civil War veterans in Oklahoma and Arkansas, material that later informed Rifles for Watie. Thomas Y. Crowell published the historical novel in 1957, and it received the Newbery Medal the following year. Through sixteen-year-old Union soldier Jeff Bussey, Keith presents the conflict west of the Mississippi and the divided allegiances of Indian Territory, including Cherokee general Stand Watie. Keith wrote numerous books, many centered on Oklahoma history or sports, and received the Arrell Gibson Lifetime Achievement Award in 1993. His dual career linked archival research, university athletics, and storytelling, while the veteran interviews gave his best-known novel an unusually specific regional foundation.
