Helen Boyd is the author name used by Gail Kramer, an American writer, educator, and advocate whose nonfiction examines gender, partnership, and social expectations. She’s Not the Man I Married, published by Seal Press in 2007, follows My Husband Betty and continues Boyd's account of marriage to a gender-nonconforming partner. The second book broadens the earlier memoir through cultural analysis, asking how identity, desire, language, and public recognition shape a long relationship. Boyd's willingness to record uncertainty gives the work a more questioning form than a conventional guide. She later joined Lawrence University, teaching gender studies and first-year courses before moving into institutional access and community roles. Her campus work has included advising student groups and supporting Pride initiatives. Publisher and university records establish the book as both personal narrative and an extension of her educational work. She’s Not the Man I Married remains closely associated with Boyd because it connects private experience to wider debates without presenting one household as a universal model.
