Henry Dircks pursued practical engineering, scientific writing, chemistry, invention, and literary history across an unusually varied career. He worked on railway, canal, and mining projects, later becoming a consulting engineer, and he belonged to several learned societies. Dircks is also associated with the projection method later popularized under the name Pepper's ghost, although John Henry Pepper developed the working theatrical version.
