Henry Fuseli was a Swiss-born painter, writer, and teacher whose career became closely tied to Britain's Royal Academy. After working as a translator and book illustrator, he developed a dramatic art shaped by literature, history, and forceful figure drawing. The National Portrait Gallery records his service as professor of painting and Keeper at the Academy. Lectures on Painting preserves the principles he presented to students there, moving through invention, composition, expression, and the study of earlier masters. The 1820 volume also contains additional observations and notes, giving the book the character of both a course and a reflective statement on artistic judgment. It connects Fuseli's public teaching directly with the intellectual ambitions visible in his Shakespearean and Miltonic subjects.
