Henry Walter Bates

Henry Walter Bates (1825-1892) was an English naturalist and explorer, largely self taught, who spent eleven years on the Amazon and described the form of protective mimicry that bears his name. A friend of Darwin and Wallace, he later served for decades as secretary of the Royal Geographical Society.
