Horace White combined American journalist, editor, economist, and translator whose career included senior work at the Chicago Tribune and the New York Evening Post. He reported on the Civil War, wrote extensively on monetary policy, and produced an English translation of Appian’s Roman History. Cicero, Clodius and Milo began as a lecture delivered before the Harvard Classical Club on April 25, 1900. The published study examines political violence and factional conflict in the late Roman Republic through the linked careers of Cicero, Publius Clodius Pulcher, and Titus Annius Milo. White’s command of Appian and other classical sources gives the essay a translator’s attention to competing narratives. Cicero, Clodius and Milo also reflects his lifelong concern with institutions under pressure, a subject he approached elsewhere through American finance and public policy. The work is compact, but it places street conflict, prosecutions, exile, and elite rivalry within the weakening republican order rather than treating the three men as isolated personalities.
