Author: Isamu Fukui
Isamu Fukui began writing the dystopian Truancy series while still a New York student, drawing on his dissatisfaction with rigid educational systems. Truancy Origins is the prequel to Truancy and explains how twin brothers Umasi and Zen developed opposing responses to the authoritarian Education City. Adopted by the Mayor, the brothers grow up inside the ruling household before discovering the harm produced by its institutions. Their divided loyalties establish the conflict that later shapes the Truancy movement and the Student Militia. Tor Teen identifies Truancy Origins as part of Fukui’s three-book sequence and describes its focus on family, education, rebellion, and political control. An interview in The ALAN Review records Fukui’s account of the series and his decision to present this volume from a more neutral perspective than the first novel. Through the twins, Truancy Origins turns the background of a dystopian revolt into a personal family history, showing how shared experiences can lead two people toward sharply different ideas of justice and duty.
