J. Alan Veerkamp is a Michigan-raised writer whose background in visual art and early interest in comics developed into science fiction and fantasy. The Luxorian Fugitive opens the Centauri Survivors Second Chance Chronicles. Its principal figures, security chief Liam Jacks and captain Marc Danverse, work aboard the transport vessel Santa Claus among settlements in the Proxima Centauri cluster. A stop on Luxoria brings the guarded passenger Hadrian Jamison aboard, and the unanswered questions surrounding him soon threaten the crew’s fragile peace. NineStar Press issued the novel in editions associated with the sequence’s later volumes A Cook’s Tale and Priest and Pariahs. The Luxorian Fugitive uses interplanetary travel as a setting for people trying to live beyond earlier conflicts, with loyalty aboard a small ship shaping every decision. Veerkamp’s interest in visual storytelling remains apparent in the distinct planets, vessel, and ensemble movement. His wider bibliography includes standalone fantasy and collaborative anthology work, but this novel begins his most clearly connected spacefaring series.
