Jean Alexandre Michel André Castaigne (1861-1929) was a French painter and illustrator who trained in Paris under Jean-Léon Gérôme and Alexandre Cabanel, then moved to the United States in 1890 and directed a small art school in Baltimore. He became one of the busiest magazine illustrators of the period, working for Scribner's, The Century and Harper's Weekly, and is known for his drawings of the 1896 Athens Olympic Games and a long picture series on Alexander the Great. He also supplied the illustrations for the first American edition of Gaston Leroux's The Phantom of the Opera. He wrote and illustrated a few books of his own, of which The Bill-Toppers is the most widely read.
