J. R. Ellis, whose full name is John R. Ellis, writes the Yorkshire Murder Mystery series featuring DCI Jim Oldroyd. He spent most of his life in Yorkshire and taught in further education around Leeds before retiring. The Nidderdale Murders is the fifth Oldroyd mystery and sets its central puzzle in a fictional Dales village. Ellis builds the novels around both the culprit's identity and the mechanics of an apparently impossible crime. His settings draw on the county's landscapes, history, language and communities, while his work beyond detective fiction includes poetry, ghost stories and biography.
