James Jeans (1877-1946) was an English physicist, astronomer and mathematician who worked on stellar dynamics and the kinetic theory of gases before turning, in his fifties, to writing for the public. Knighted in 1928, he became one of the first scientists to reach a mass audience through books and radio.
