Jean Johnson

Jean Johnson writes military science fiction and fantasy romance, often organizing large speculative worlds through long-running series. An Officer’s Duty is the second volume in Theirs Not to Reason Why, following A Soldier's Duty and continuing the story of Ia. Ace released this military science fiction and space opera title in 2012. Ia enters officer training while preparing for a future crisis she believes only she can foresee, so the book combines academy discipline, family obligations on Sanctuary, and planning for command. Johnson's other series include the Sons of Destiny, Guardians of Destiny, and Flame Sea novels, showing how readily she moves between science-fictional and romantic modes. In An Officer’s Duty, that range supports a protagonist whose strategic foresight matters as much as rank or combat skill. The novel is therefore best read as a series continuation with a defined publisher, sequence, and lead character, not as a standalone military adventure.
