Jeffery Deaver
1950
The Bone Collector introduced Lincoln Rhyme, a forensic criminalist paralysed from the neck down who works a New York case from a bed with one usable finger, and Amelia Sachs, the patrol officer who becomes his eyes and hands. Deaver was a journalist and then a corporate lawyer, writing on the commute, and the habit that came out of it is the late reversal, usually several of them in the last thirty pages. The Rhyme novels now run past a dozen. He was invited to write a Bond continuation novel in 2011, and says he plots for eight months and drafts in one.
