The Ruin of Kings opens with two narrators who loathe each other arguing in the footnotes about the story they are jointly telling, one of them a prisoner and the other his jailer, and the reader has to work out which parts either of them is shading. A Chorus of Dragons runs five long volumes on prophecy and reincarnation and refuses to let either work simply. Lyons worked as a video game artist first, and the world is built the way a game world is built, from the systems outward.
