Jessica Greyson developed Annabeth’s War as a stand-alone fantasy about an ordinary girl defending the kingdom of Belterra while its king is absent. Annabeth relies on sword training, disguises, and determination as she tries to rescue her father and Prince Alfred from Lord Raburn’s reach. In a 2013 author interview, Greyson said the book grew from an older story idea and from her wish to create a lead whose gentleness remained part of her strength. She described roughly twenty-three months of writing and revision before its initial publication. The novel was Greyson’s debut, and Ready Writer Press later issued a hardcover edition, preserving its place as the starting point of her published fiction.
