Joan Silber is an American fiction writer known for linked narratives that move across households, countries, and decades while showing how one decision alters another person’s life. Improvement, published by Counterpoint in 2017, begins with Reyna, a single mother in New York, and her older relative Kiki, whose years in Turkey open the story toward a wider network of travelers, families, and chance encounters. The book’s eight connected chapters can be read as a novel or as interlocking stories. That flexible form earned Improvement both the National Book Critics Circle Award for fiction and the PEN/Faulkner Award. Silber had developed related ideas about narrative duration in The Art of Time in Fiction and used linked structures in books such as Ideas of Heaven and Fools.
