Author: John Auldjo
John Richardson Auldjo (1805–1886) was born in Montreal into a merchant family, educated at Trinity College, Cambridge, and made his name in 1827 by climbing Mont Blanc at twenty-two with six guides, publishing an account of the ascent illustrated from his own drawings. He then settled at Naples, joined Sir William Gell's circle there, and sketched Vesuvius through its active years, work that appeared as Sketches of Vesuvius in 1832. He signed the present journal F.G.S., for the Geological Society, and was elected a fellow of the Royal Society in 1840. He spent his last years in Geneva as honorary British consul, dying in 1886.
