John Butler Yeats built his reputation through portrait painting, essays, and the intellectually independent conversation that shaped a remarkable artistic family. Trained for the law, he abandoned legal practice for art and studied at Heatherley’s in London. His portraits included writers, actors, political figures, and members of his family, among them the poet W. B. Yeats and the painter Jack B. Yeats. He moved to New York in 1907 and remained there, becoming a familiar presence in literary and artistic circles. Essays, Irish and American gathers reflective prose on art, personality, education, criticism, and public life, with an introductory appreciation by George William Russell. Published in 1918 by Talbot Press and T. Fisher Unwin, the volume preserves the alert, conversational quality for which Yeats was admired.
