John Eisenberg is an American sportswriter and historian whose books recover the people and decisions behind major institutions. The League recounts how George Halas, Tim Mara, George Preston Marshall, Bert Bell, and Art Rooney helped turn a precarious professional football association into the National Football League. Eisenberg follows their rivalry and cooperation through the league’s early years, the Depression, and the Second World War, using archival research and interviews with family members. Basic Books published the history in 2018. Before writing books full time, Eisenberg spent three decades at the Baltimore Sun and produced thousands of columns, a reporting background that also informs his work on baseball, horse racing, and the Baltimore Ravens.
