John Lloyd Stephens combined travel writing, diplomacy, and a later role as a central figure in early railway planning across Panama. Incidents of Travel in Greece, Turkey, Russia, and Poland, Vol. 2 (of 2) belongs to the travel writing that established his literary reputation before his better-known journeys in Central America. Harper and Brothers first issued the two-volume work in 1838, and later editions preserved Stephens's first-person account of movement through the Black Sea region, Russia, and Poland. The second volume includes Odessa, Moscow, Saint Petersburg, Warsaw, and the practical uncertainties of nineteenth-century travel, from passports and hired servants to roads and border officials. Library and digitized-text records identify Stephens as author and the work as prose concerned with both contemporary life and antiquities. His observational narrative combines encounters, historical digressions, landscape, architecture, and the logistical detail of crossing unfamiliar political territories.
