John Moore
John Moore was a Scottish physician and writer whose years abroad with aristocratic patients informed his observations of European society. A View of Society and Manners in Italy, Vol. 1 of 2 is the first of two volumes on Italy, arranged as letters. He discusses cities, courts, churches, painting, customs, social rank, and conversations, often comparing Italian institutions with those he had encountered elsewhere. His medical training appears in his interest in character and conduct, while his experience in France, Switzerland, and Germany gives the account a comparative frame. The prose combines description, anecdote, criticism, and reflection without presenting Italy as a single uniform culture. Published before Moore became widely known as a novelist, A View of Society and Manners in Italy, Vol. 1 of 2 belongs to the travel writing that first established his literary reputation. It also records how an educated eighteenth-century British observer interpreted differences in politics, religion, art, and daily life.
