Count the Ways is a multigenerational family novel centered on Eleanor, Cam, and their children in New Hampshire. Maynard later continued Eleanor's story in How the Light Gets In, released in 2024. This sequel relationship makes Count the Ways the opening movement of a larger family history, while the first novel remains focused on memory, responsibility, estrangement, and the difficult work of rebuilding connection over decades.
