Julia De Wolf Addison combined writing, design, and craft, approaching art history through practical training as well as travel. Arts And Crafts In The Middle Ages examines medieval applied arts, including metalwork, jewelry, textiles, illumination, sculpture, and stained glass, while explaining the artisans and techniques behind surviving objects. G. Bell published the work in London in 1908. Addison was born in Boston in 1866, studied art in Boston, England, and Italy, and became active in fields such as ecclesiastical and heraldic design, embroidery, mosaic, and manuscript illumination. She also belonged to the Society of Arts and Crafts and wrote guides to major European art collections. The medieval survey reflects that combination of makerly knowledge and historical curiosity.
