Kerri Maher writes historical fiction about women whose private choices intersect with public cultural change. The Paris Bookseller reimagines Sylvia Beach's creation of Shakespeare and Company, opened in Paris in 1919 as both a bookshop and lending library. The novel follows Beach's friendship with James Joyce and her risky decision to publish Ulysses when other publishers would not, while also tracing the personal and financial pressures that followed its success. Berkley issued the novel in 2022. Maher anchors the story in the literary networks of 1920s and 1930s Paris, using Beach's work as bookseller and publisher to connect artistic freedom, friendship, commerce, and the survival of an independent institution.
