Lauren Willig
1977
Lauren Willig writes historical fiction that places private loyalties inside large political and social changes. Band of Sisters draws on the Smith College Relief Unit, following women who travel to France during the First World War to support civilian communities. Willig centres the friction between Kate Moran, a scholarship graduate, and the wealthier classmates with whom she serves, making class differences part of the group's work abroad. The Summer Country moves between family history and colonial Barbados, where Emily Dawson inherits a ruined plantation and begins uncovering the property's concealed past. William Morrow issued the books in 2021 and 2019 respectively. Across both, Willig uses archival research, friendship, inheritance, and contested memory to ask who gets remembered, whose records survive, and how later generations interpret what they receive.
