Leonard William King was an Assyriologist and archaeologist whose work at the British Museum centered on cuneiform texts and the ancient Near East. Legends of Babylon and Egypt in relation to Hebrew tradition developed from the British Academy's Schweich Lectures for 1916. Humphrey Milford issued it for Oxford University Press in 1918. Across three lectures, King compares Mesopotamian and Egyptian material with Hebrew traditions concerning origins, creation, and the flood. His argument relies on then-recent archaeological discoveries, including Sumerian evidence that had expanded scholarly understanding of traditions older than familiar Babylonian versions. King's position as Assistant Keeper of Egyptian and Assyrian Antiquities and his professorship at King's College London placed him close to both museum collections and academic debate. The book belongs beside his studies of Babylonian religion, royal chronicles, and early Mesopotamian history. Although later discoveries have revised parts of its chronology and interpretation, it remains a clear record of how early twentieth-century Assyriology connected newly recovered texts with comparative biblical scholarship.
