Lucy Aikin combined poetry, biography, editing, and history in a career that gave unusual attention to women in literary and social life. The 1810 Epistles On Women carried the fuller title Epistles on Women, Exemplifying Their Character and Condition in Various Ages and Nations, with Miscellaneous Poems. Its verse surveys women's position across a broad historical span. Memoirs of the Court of Queen Elizabeth followed in 1818 and established the court history for which Aikin became best known. Rather than limiting the period to government and warfare, she considered manners, writing, education, and the lives of prominent individuals around Elizabeth I. Aikin later produced companion studies of the courts of James I and Charles I, as well as a life of Joseph Addison. Her father was the physician and author John Aikin, while Anna Laetitia Barbauld was her aunt, placing her within a family deeply involved in education and print culture.
