Maria Edgeworth wrote fiction and educational prose with a sharp interest in social behavior, learning, and Irish life. Practical Education, Volume I was produced with her father, Richard Lovell Edgeworth, and develops an experience-based approach to teaching through essays on attention, reading, conduct, and other parts of childhood education. Castle Rackrent, published anonymously in 1800, uses the voice of the steward Thady Quirk to portray an Anglo-Irish landed family. Belinda followed in 1801 as a society novel concerned with judgment, independence, and the pressures surrounding marriage and reputation. Dublin UNESCO City of Literature describes Castle Rackrent as a formative regional novel and connects Edgeworth's educational work to her long collaboration with her father. Across these three titles, her observational comedy and pedagogical interests meet in different forms, from experimental education to satirical and domestic fiction.
