Marsden Hartley

Marsden Hartley (1877–1943) was an American modernist painter and writer, born in Lewiston, Maine. He is best known for his bold, emotionally charged canvases, among them the German military abstractions he painted in Berlin during the First World War, and later for his rugged landscapes and portraits of his native Maine. A member of Alfred Stieglitz's New York circle, he also produced essays and poetry throughout his career.
