Townsend was born in New York State, moved south after marriage, and wrote under her own name as well as the pen name Xariffa. Her later publications included poems, travel writing, and work connected with Louisiana’s cultural memory. She became active in literary organizations and was recognized especially for verse shaped by family, faith, loss, and regional identity. The Brother Clerks shows an earlier prose phase of that career, using workplace relationships to build a cautionary social narrative.
