Mary Edward Feehan was the religious name and publishing byline of Agnes M. Feehan, a writer of children's fiction who also used the pen name Clementia. Mostly Mary and Mary’s Rainbow belong to her Mary Selwyn sequence, a series centered on family life at Bird-A-Lea and the experiences of Mary and the younger twins Berta and Beth. Mostly Mary appeared in 1921, while Mary’s Rainbow followed in 1922 and continues the earlier story. Mary Hughes illustrated Mary’s Rainbow, a relationship the shortened title does not show. Mary Edward Feehan also published as Clementia, and the two books are the fourth and fifth Mary Selwyn volumes. Feehan’s books are distinct from Gwynedd Rae’s later, unrelated Mostly Mary about Mary Plain. Together, Mostly Mary and Mary’s Rainbow show Feehan working within an ongoing juvenile series under more than one documented form of her name.
