Mary Platt Parmele was an American historical writer who made national histories approachable for general readers around the turn of the twentieth century. A Short History of Spain surveys the peninsula from its earliest peoples through Roman, Gothic, Islamic, and Christian rule, then follows the monarchy and empire into Parmele's own era. Charles Scribner's Sons issued a second edition in 1898, and surviving library records describe a compact 167-page volume rather than a specialist academic study. Parmele organized political change around ruling houses, wars, religious institutions, and Spain's relationships with neighboring powers. The book belongs beside her similarly concise histories of France, England, Germany, Russia, and the United States, which helped establish her reputation for broad chronological narratives.
