Melinda French Gates works through Pivotal, the group of organizations she founded to advance social progress, after more than two decades helping set priorities at the Gates Foundation. The Moment of Lift: How Empowering Women Changes the World was her first book. It combines research with accounts gathered through her international work and argues that expanding women’s opportunities strengthens families and communities. Flatiron Books published it in 2019. The book later supplied the name for Moment of Lift Books, the nonfiction imprint French Gates established with Flatiron.
