Pretoria Boys High School gave Michael Vlismas his way into Elon Musk: Risking it All. He went to the same school as his subject, and the book leans on that shared ground to rebuild Musk's Pretoria childhood, the strained relationship with his father Errol, the move to Canada at seventeen, the founding of SpaceX and the building of Tesla; a later edition adds a long interview with Errol Musk himself. Vlismas, who lives in Somerset West, is a South African sports journalist who began at the Pretoria News and now runs his own sports media agency, specialising in golf. He has been golf correspondent for the Sunday Times and City Press and Africa correspondent for Global Golf Post. Earlier books include Challenging Beliefs: Memoirs of a Career, written with the sports scientist Tim Noakes, along with biographies of the golfer Gary Player and the cyclist Chris Froome.
