Michelle Harrison
The Thirteen Treasures won the Waterstones children's prize and puts a girl who can see fairies, the older and considerably more dangerous kind, into an English country house with a grandmother who will not discuss it. The Widdershins books follow three sisters with inherited magic and a curse in a marsh town. Harrison worked in a bookshop and studied illustration, and illustrates some of her own work. The fairies here are the folklore ones who take children and leave something else, not the Victorian ones with wings.
