Miranda Cowley Heller
1962
Cowley Heller ran drama series at HBO for years, commissioning through the period that produced The Sopranos and Six Feet Under, then left television and wrote a first novel in her fifties. The Paper Palace covers twenty-four hours at a Cape Cod summer house and the fifty years that led to them, including harm done to a child and a decision taken at breakfast. It sold heavily and split readers over an ending that resolves nothing. The setting is the family camp she grew up in.
