Nathaniel Egleston

Nathaniel Egleston was an American Congregational minister, educator, and early advocate for forest preservation. Known more fully as Nathaniel Hillyer Egleston, he served as the second chief of the United States Division of Forestry from 1883 to 1886. Arbor Day Leaves, issued by the American Book Company in 1893, gathers readings, recitations, music, practical information, and a complete program for Arbor Day observance. The book reflects his effort to connect public education with care for trees and rural landscapes. His wider bibliography includes writing on tree planting, village improvement, and federal forestry work.
