The Calling is his prequel novel about DCI John Luther, taking readers into the case that fractures the detective's personal and professional relationships before the opening of the screen series. Simon & Schuster UK publishes it as A John Luther Novel, while a United States edition uses Luther as its main cover title and The Calling beneath it. Cross's dual role matters to the book: it is prose by the character's original creator, not an adaptation commissioned from another writer. The novel won the Ngaio Marsh Award for Best Crime Novel.
